We Built a Free App Store Ranking Checker. Here Is Why Every App Developer Needs One.
TL;DR: We just launched a free tool that lets you check any app's chart position across the iOS App Store and Google Play -- across Free, Paid, and Top Grossing lists for every category. No signup required. Search for any app, see where it ranks, how long it has been on the charts, and whether it is climbing or falling. Here is why chart rankings matter more than most developers think, and what you can learn from them.

Why Chart Rankings Still Matter in 2026
App developers spend a fortune on user acquisition -- paid ads, influencer campaigns, ASO consultants -- but most have no easy way to answer a basic question: Where does my app actually rank in the charts?
Apple and Google do not make this simple. You can browse charts in the App Store or Play Store manually, but there is no way to search for your app and see its positions across every category and chart type in one place. Third-party tools that do this charge $50-200/month minimum.
We think that is backwards. Chart position is foundational data. It should be free.
What the Ranking Checker Does
Our App Store Ranking Checker is a free tool that works for both iOS and Android apps. Here is what you get:
Search any app by name. Type an app name, pick from autocomplete results, and see its complete chart profile. Works for any of the 2+ million apps in the App Store and Google Play.
See rankings across all chart types. Every app can appear in up to three chart types:
- Free -- ranked by download volume (free apps only)
- Paid -- ranked by download volume for paid apps
- Top Grossing -- ranked by total revenue including in-app purchases
An app like YouTube might rank #1 on the Free chart but #15 on Top Grossing. A meditation app might not appear on Free at all but sit at #8 on Top Grossing thanks to subscription revenue. Each chart tells a different story.
Track rank changes. See whether an app moved up or down since the previous day. A sudden rank drop can signal a bad update, a competitor's campaign, or a seasonal shift. A steady climb usually means organic growth is working.
See days on chart. This is one of the most underrated signals. An app that has been in the top 50 for 300+ days has fundamentally different economics than one that spiked to #5 last week. Days on chart separates sustainable businesses from flash-in-the-pan launches.
Category-level rankings. An app might rank #150 overall in Free apps but #3 in its specific category. Category rankings are where mid-size apps actually compete, and where ASO has the biggest impact.
What You Can Learn From Chart Data
Chart rankings are not just vanity metrics. Here are three ways smart developers use them:
1. Competitive Intelligence
Before you build, check where the incumbents sit. If the top 5 apps in your target category have been on the charts for 500+ days with minimal rank changes, you are looking at an entrenched market. If you see frequent movement and new entrants cracking the top 20, there is room.
2. Launch Timing
Chart positions fluctuate seasonally. Fitness apps spike in January. Shopping apps peak in November. Tax apps surge in March. Checking historical chart presence for your category helps you time your launch for maximum visibility.
3. Monetization Signals
The gap between an app's Free chart rank and its Top Grossing rank reveals monetization efficiency. An app ranked #50 Free but #10 Top Grossing is extracting enormous value per user. An app ranked #5 Free but absent from Top Grossing is leaving money on the table. This data helps you benchmark your own monetization strategy.
How We Built It
The Ranking Checker is part of our growing suite of free ASO tools at App Vulture. Under the hood:
- Daily chart scraping across every iOS and Android category for Free, Paid, and Top Grossing lists
- Real-time app search against the iTunes Search API and Google Play
- Historical tracking for rank changes and days-on-chart calculations
- No rate limits for users -- check as many apps as you want
We built this because we needed it ourselves. Our platform tracks 35,000+ apps for deeper intelligence -- sentiment analysis, zombie app detection, review insights -- but chart rankings are the starting point. Everyone should have access to that starting point for free.
What Is Next
The Ranking Checker is the second tool in our free ASO toolkit, alongside the ASO Keyword Suggestions tool. We are actively building more:
- Keyword Rankings -- see which keywords any app ranks for, with volume and difficulty scores (available now for logged-in users)
- Competitor Keyword Analysis -- find keyword gaps between you and your competitors
- App Name Generator -- AI-powered brainstorming for your next app name
Each tool is designed to give indie developers and small studios access to the same data that enterprise ASO platforms charge thousands for.
