App revenue varies enormously by category and ranking. A top 10 grossing app can make $10M+ per month, while most apps outside the top 1,000 make less than $1,000 per month. Our app revenue calculator estimates monthly app store revenue based on an app's current chart position, calibrated from SEC 10-K filings of 30+ public app companies. Search for any iOS or Android app above to see its specific estimate.
We use a power law regression model calibrated from publicly available SEC 10-K filings. Apps on the Top Grossing chart get a direct revenue estimate from their rank position. Paid apps without a grossing rank are estimated using monthly downloads multiplied by price, minus the 30% platform fee. Free apps with only ad revenue fall outside our model.
Our top-grossing-rank model has an R-squared of 0.88 against known public company revenues. High-confidence estimates (apps on the overall grossing chart) are the most reliable. Category-level and paid-price estimates are less precise but still useful for relative comparisons and order-of-magnitude sizing. All estimates show a confidence badge.
Download estimates use a similar rank-based model calibrated from apps that publicly disclose their numbers. The model accounts for chart position, category, and platform. Monthly download estimates help you gauge user acquisition velocity when Apple and Google don't share exact numbers.
Revenue estimates are available for apps that appear on the Top Grossing charts (overall or category-level) or that have a paid price. Free apps with no grossing chart presence cannot be reliably estimated since their revenue comes from in-app purchases and ads not reflected in chart data.
